'Tata Salt Lite' is a brand of low-sodium salt introduced by Tata Chemicals Limited in 2007.
It was launched twenty four years after the launch of the iconic 'Tata Salt' brand in 1983, with the intention of reducing the risk of suffering from lifestyle related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
High blood pressure or hypertension, medically, has always been linked to high intake of Sodium through our food. Sodium, which is a key ingredient of salt, has to be consumed in the right amounts. But, the stressful lifestyles of the urban Indian population coupled with their altered food habits in the early 21st century had led to an exponential increase in the occurrence of lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. According to a research conducted by the Tata Salt team in 2005, over 40 percent of the adult population suffered from hypertension.
Thus, Tata Salt Lite was designed as a brand of salt which would have 15 percent less Sodium than the ordinary salt, and was targeted at this educated and health conscious population with the intention of regulating the intake of Sodium through their food.
